On Saturday, September 24, 2022, at 12:15 a.m., members of the Colorado Springs Police Department Stetson Hills Division were dispatched to the 9400 block of Vista Del Pico Boulevard regarding a single motor vehicle traffic crash. Once on scene, officers discovered that a single vehicle was traveling north on Vista Del Pico at a high rate of speed when the driver lost control of the car. The vehicle struck the east curb of the roadway and began to roll. While rolling, two of the passengers in the vehicle were ejected. The vehicle was occupied by four people, all of whom were transported from the scene to local hospitals, some with serious life-threatening injuries. Due to the nature of the crash, the Colorado Springs Police Department Major Crash Team was contacted and responded to the scene to assume the investigation.

On Thursday, September 29, 2022, one of the passengers from the traffic crash passed away from the injuries they suffered during the crash. On Friday, September 30, 2022, the El Paso County Coroner’s Office conducted an autopsy on the deceased person. That person has been identified as 19-year-old Tate Byrum of Colorado Springs. This is the 41st fatal traffic crash in Colorado Springs this year. At this same time last year, there were 38 fatal traffic crashes in Colorado Springs.
