The City of Colorado Springs has added an additional red light camera at Maizeland and Academy as part of the “Red Light Safety Camera Program.” The goal of the red light camera program is to protect drivers, passengers, cyclists, and pedestrians from injuries or crashes caused by red light running. It is also a component of the Colorado Springs Police Department’s effort to reduce crashes and improve citizen safety in Colorado Springs. The new intersection will go live today, May 5, 2022, and begin with a week-long calibration phase before entering a 30-day warning period. Following the warning period, a $75 fine will be implemented for violators.

Intersection to go live May 5, 2022

Maizeland and Academy (westbound lanes, to include one through lane, one combined through and right turn lane, and one left turn only lane)

Timeline

On May 5, 2022, the new intersection will enter a calibration phase, which will remain in effect until the warning period begins on May 12, 2022. During the calibration phase, the cameras will flash or “go off” as drivers pass through the intersection. This DOES NOT mean any citations are being recorded during this time. This calibration phase is just in place to ensure the cameras are working properly.

The 30-day warning period will begin on May 12, 2022, and end on June 12, 2022. Motorists captured by the camera running a red light at the new intersection will be issued a written warning by mail for the next 30 days during the warning period.

On June 12, 2022, the camera will officially go live and drivers who enter the intersections after the light has turned red will receive a $75 citation (no points will be assessed).

About the Red Light Camera Safety Program

The automated red-light safety camera enforcement program works to change driver behavior through increased enforcement of red light laws and increased public awareness of red-light running.

Data shows that red-light safety cameras can change driving behavior and city officials chose the locations after evaluating several factors including crash data and where the technology would have the most impact.

Cameras operate 24-hours-a-day and capture images of vehicles when they run a red light at an intersection. Violations are issued after police personnel confirms a violation has occurred. Signs posted along the street will alert drivers that red-light safety cameras are in use at the intersection ahead. For more information about the program, visit www.ColoradoSprings.gov/RedLightSafety.

Colorado Springs contracts with Verra Mobility as their red-light safety camera vendor. Verra Mobility is the leading provider of red light and speed camera enforcement programs across North America.
