On Tuesday, September 27, 2022, at 10:07 p.m., members of the Colorado Springs Police Department, Stetson Hills Division, were dispatched to the 3600 block of Maizeland Road regarding an auto versus pedestrian hit-and-run traffic crash. When officers arrived in the area, they located a deceased individual in the middle of the roadway with a bicycle that appeared to have been run over. Due to the nature of the crash, the Major Crash Team was contacted and responded to the scene to further the investigation.

The investigation has shown that the victim of the hit and run was riding a bicycle west on Maizeland Road from Academy Blvd with no visible lights or marking on the bicycle. As the cyclist was riding west, a westbound vehicle struck the cyclist and knocked him down, depositing him on the roadway. The initial driver turned around and was parked facing east in the area when a second car traveling east on Maizeland Road struck and ran over the victim in the roadway and continued to drive, leaving the area. Shortly after the second car, a third car traveling east on Maizeland Road also struck and ran over the victim before leaving the area.  At this point in the investigation, speed does not appear to be a factor in this crash.

On Wednesday, September 28, 2022, the El Paso County Coroner’s Office conducted an autopsy on the deceased victim. The deceased was identified as 33-year-old David Baker of Colorado Springs. This is the 43rd fatal traffic crash in Colorado Springs this year. At this same time last year, there were 38th fatal traffic crashes in Colorado Springs.
