Fun Facts about Big Horn Sheep
- The Rocky Mountain big horn sheep was adopted as the state mammal on May 1, 1961.
- The bighorn sheep was named for its massive horns. Both males (rams) and females (ewes) have horns. Ram horns bend back and downward, and can weigh as much as 50 pounds! Ewe horns are short and spiked.
- Bighorn sheep live in the mountains of Colorado and are known for their agility and sense of balance.
- Bighorn sheep live in groups called “herds.” The sheep frequently seen in Garden of the Gods Park are members of the Rampart Range Herd. They tend to visit the north end of the park and can be seen year round. Nobody really knows when they’ll show up, so keep your eyes open!
